How to Transfer Your Medical Cannabis Prescription to Montrose
If you already have a valid medical cannabis authorization in Canada, you may not need to complete a brand-new medical assessment simply because you want to change providers. Under Health Canada’s medical cannabis framework, a patient may switch from one federally licensed seller to another and request the transfer of their original medical document.
Patients often search for this as “transferring a medical cannabis prescription,” “moving a cannabis script,” or “switching medical cannabis providers.” In Health Canada’s terminology, the document issued by your health care practitioner is a medical document. It records information such as your authorized daily amount and period of use.
Montrose can accept eligible patient registrations for medical cannabis. If you are currently registered with another licensed seller and want to move your medical access to Montrose, start below and our team can help you understand the information required for the transfer.
How the Medical Document Transfer Works
You remain in control of the switch. Your current licensed seller transfers the medical document directly to the new licensed seller at your request.
1. Start With Montrose
Tell us that you want to transfer your medical cannabis document and identify the licensed seller where you are currently registered.
2. Ask Your Current Seller to Transfer
Contact your current licensed seller and request that your original medical document be transferred directly to Montrose Cannabis.
3. Complete Montrose Registration
Once Montrose receives and verifies the required documentation, complete any remaining client registration requirements and receive access to the medical store.
Start Your Transfer
Already registered with another medical cannabis licensed seller? Send us your basic transfer details first. Our patient team can confirm the next step before your current provider sends the document.
Have the following information ready:
- Your full legal name and contact information
- The name of your current medical cannabis licensed seller
- Your medical document expiry date, if known
- Your authorized daily amount, if known
Important: Your original medical document is generally transferred directly between licensed sellers. Do not upload sensitive health documentation through an unsecured form or email unless Montrose has specifically provided a secure method.
What Happens to Your Current Medical Document?
Health Canada states that patients may switch to a different licensed seller at any time. To switch, you contact your current licensed seller and tell them which licensed seller you want to move to. If the receiving licensed seller agrees to register you, the current seller must transfer the medical document at your request.
This is different from simply emailing a photocopy of a prescription. The transfer process is designed to move the medical document between authorized sellers while preserving the integrity of your registration.
If your medical document is expired or you would rather obtain a new authorization, you can use Montrose’s medical intake process instead.
Can I Transfer From Any Canadian Medical Cannabis Provider?
If your medical document is currently held by a federally licensed seller authorized for medical cannabis sales, you can ask that seller about transferring your original medical document to another eligible licensed seller.
Transfer requirements can vary depending on the status of your document and your existing registration. Montrose will still need to complete its own client-registration requirements before medical sales can begin.
If you’re unsure whether your current provider is a licensed seller, send us the provider name and we can tell you what information we need from you next.

Medical Cannabis Transfer FAQ
Can I transfer my medical cannabis prescription to Montrose?
If you have a valid medical document held by another federally licensed medical cannabis seller, you may request a transfer to Montrose, subject to Montrose accepting your registration and completing applicable registration requirements.
Do I need a new doctor appointment to switch medical cannabis providers?
Not necessarily. Health Canada allows a patient to request transfer of the original medical document between licensed sellers. If your document is expired or otherwise cannot be transferred, you may need a new medical document.
What is the difference between a medical cannabis prescription and a medical document?
“Prescription” and “script” are common search terms, but Health Canada uses the term medical document for the authorization issued by a health care practitioner for cannabis for medical purposes.
Does my current provider have to transfer my medical document?
Health Canada states that if the new licensed seller agrees to register you, your current licensed seller must transfer the medical document to that seller at your request.
Can my current provider send the medical document directly to Montrose?
Yes. The original medical document is transferred between the licensed sellers. Contact Montrose first so we can provide the correct transfer instructions and receiving details.
Can I just upload a copy of my medical cannabis prescription?
A copy may not be sufficient for a formal transfer. Contact Montrose before sending medical documentation so we can direct you to the appropriate secure process.
What if my medical document has expired?
If your authorization has expired, start a new medical intake with Montrose. A health care practitioner can assess whether a new medical document is appropriate.
Can I transfer to Montrose from another province?
Medical cannabis registration with a federally licensed seller is a federal framework. Montrose serves registered medical patients across Canada, subject to applicable registration, shipping and regulatory requirements.
How long does a transfer take?
Timing depends on your current licensed seller, the status of your medical document and completion of Montrose's registration requirements. Starting with accurate provider information helps avoid delays.
